Pretty in Pink

I'm finally back! Did ya miss me? I've been busy working on this antique mahogany CL find. Debated between my typical blue or pale pink. Michelle from Shell's Shabby Shack thought pink was the way to go. I love all her redos so pink it is!
Sanded and primed and primed again and again. The red stain just kept bleeding through. Oil based primer is on the shopping list. Three coats of primer later it was finally ready for some pink.

Picked these up at HD to make it a little more girly. After painting all of them I decided to put them on just one drawer.

Template made of scrap cardboard.

I decided to use glass pulls on some of the drawers instead of the original hardware so I filled the old holes with Quick Wood and sanded them smooth. This is where the template comes in handy and saves so much time. Grab a piece of cardboard that is square. Geometry...90 degree angles, yup it's all comin' back to you, now isn't it?  Measure where you need to drill the hole on your template using your drawer as your guide. Mark the spot and shove a screw in your mark, making a little hole. Just take it around to all your drawers, stick a pencil in the hole to mark and done. You are ready to drill! But be warned especially w/ antiques, sometime the drawers may appear to be the same size and then you realize one or two are just a little bit wider. Trust me on this!
Now to put the drawers in. And here is where the aggravation starts! Three out of four decided they were going to stick. Yup, they were sticking a bit before but not as bad as I remembered.
The culprit...a groove worn in the wood by friction.

The fix...minwax wood filler in the groove. You could also lift the slat of wood and reverse it but this seemed easier.

Sanded smooth. The drawers don't stick as bad but they don't glide easily. I can't sell it like this so anyone have any other suggestions I might try? I already tried the soap and candle wax :)

And here it is, pretty in pink!
Thinkin' it needs a little distressing and maybe some fabric to line the drawers.

I did wind up distressing and adding a great gingham fabric but life has taken me away to not fun places. It really looks so much better w/ just a bit of distressing. I'll show you when things slow down over here. Oh how I would rather be painting furniture than dealing w/ nonsense!!!

I am totally swooning over your dresser. The pink is so perfect, the crystal knobs and the added decorations are beautiful. Sticking drawers are a real problem with antique pieces. I hate it when I finish painting and the drawers don't fit right anymore. I have found no real solution other than what you have already tried. I think people understand that the drawers on an antique are not going to glide as a newer piece. My peacock dresser had drawers like that and it still sold pretty quickly. I am interested to see if others have a solution for this. Did I mention how much I absolutely love this piece!?

Good Morning Sue!

Wow, am I in love with this dresser! What a gorgeous shade of pink you chose. Love the glass knobs, also. This is by far my favorite piece that you've done! Excellent!!! Thanks for the shout out, too! Are you keeping this one? I hope so.

Always enjoy coming by. You're an inspiration! ;) Michelle

What a gorgeous dresser, Sue!

Glass knobs were the perfect choice, I think, and the wood accents are beautiful! Some little girl is going to be very lucky! BTW, I think a bit of distressing, like you said, would also look awesome!

That is so gorgeous, I hate when the red bleeds through. What a great idea to use the wood embelishments!

Okay, so I saw the original dresser. I thought, Hmmm, this is okay, but then I saw the after and Wow, it brought out the details and I adore the glass knobs and how you embellished it. One should not judge quickly. This is a beauty.

PS Bar soap rubbed on the bottom of the drawer edges will help it glide easier.

This is gorgeous!! I really love the way the pale pink brings out all the detail. And the appliques you added are precious.
WD 40 will make those drawers slide really easy. It is a petro based product and the wood will love it. Old wood dries out and needs to be re oiled on occasion. Soap tends to dry out too quickly and wax just does not penetrate. You need WD to penetrate that wood. It always works for me!

Just gorgeous! What color did you use? I have been looking for a soft pink like this. It really turned out beautifully. As far as the drawers sticking, if it's not too bad, I say don't sweat it. It's part of the charm of an older piece! ;) found you through Nifty Thrifty Tuesdays!

What a transformation! That is the perfect shade of pink! I just read your profile.. and i see that you're a fellow "dumpster diver"! I've had my daughter in the car sliding down in the seat so no one would see her, while i grabbed stuff out of the salvage shed at the local "recycling center"...
i'm so proud to follow the blog of a woman i could go dumpster diving with!

Hi. I figured I'd share some things that over the past few weeks have helped me find my garage free of my painted furniture and in to homes that really appreciate and love them.
Thanks.
